Earth Day is Every Day

Date :

While today, April 22, may have the official title of “Earth Day”; we here at Currents of Windermere aim to be environmentally conscious and mindful of the world every day of the year!

We have a variety of new initiatives and projects ongoing, all of which make us more sustainable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly.

New Initiatives

Beekeeping Program

Planned completion date: Early Summer 2022Photo of a bee crate with the lid open.

We’ve partnered up with a local urban beekeeping company, Alvéole, to install beehives on one of our rooftops this June! Alvéole is a B Corp, meaning it’s a company that creates positive economic, social, and ecological impacts.

Installing these hives will allow us to repurpose unused space on our property for environmental purposes, will give honeybees a safe place to live, and as an added bonus; the hives will each produce sweet local honey! The installation of a hive in an urban environment requires minimal resources. Alvéole works with a special breed of Italian bees, selected over five years for their docility.

Stay tuned for information on free workshops hosted by Alvéole. We invite you to come and bee educated in the world of urban beekeeping.

The Currents Solar Project

Planned completion date: Late Summer 2022

The Currents Solar Project marks a major step for us toward becoming more environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient. Last year, we partnered with western Canada’s most experienced solar contractor, Great Canadian Solar, with the goal of installing a massive 1,428 solar panels to three of our buildings at Currents of Windermere!

While the project isn’t quite done yet; the plan is for the panels to be up and operational on our largest rooftop by the end of May, and for the panels atop the other two buildings to be soaking in the sun by the end of summer.

These panels will help tenants by reducing operating costs; will serve as a step toward net-zero; and all come with a 25-year warranty, meaning each panel will retain 80% of its charging capacity after that period of time!

Ongoing Initiatives

Lighting

Our parking lot lighting, exterior building lighting, and four of six pylon signs were recently switched to LED lighting. Why LED lighting? It’s more energy efficient by using less energy than traditional bulbs. The average LED light lasts over 50,000 hours which is 25 times longer than a traditional bulb. With a longer lifespan, this will reduce landfill waste to help make an environmental impact. All of our lights are set on timers or sensors, too!

In our office building, we’ve set lights and mechanical/HVAC on timers in an effort to save more energy. Our maintenance team has also built a box for the proper disposal of light bulbs from tenants.

Environmental

During the summer months, our maintenance team rides a bicycle to get around the property, instead of a vehicle. You can also find them using rainwater collection containers to water the flowers!
